When some puppies in my first litter got health issues my future breeding plans for Skye were ruined, so I started thinking abut leasing a female. The questions was who? I thought about it and could only really think of one I wanted to borrow; Babsan. So I called her breeder and owner Anneli and we talked long about it and a week later she said yes! Aside from the breeding part we decided I would take Babsan home to train and race her and also get to know her better. Of course Babsan wasn’t completely unfamiliar to me before as I had met her at whippet race many times and I always liked her happy and outgoing temperament. Her pedigree and speed at whippet race is also good and I’ve seen some of her siblings at racing and coursing with great results as well. The result of this loan was the lovely Trainlitter.

Babsan came to temporarily live with me in the beginning of April 2021 and she fit perfectly in the pack. Babsan is a cozy, kind and fun whippet girl. She will rarely leave a person’s side and she is completely crazy about the kids and will follow us upstairs every evening for toothbrushing and the bedtime story. At night Babsan will not leave the bed and if she can she will sleep on the pillow. No one can wag their tail like Babsan; it hits everything with a loud noise and it goes really fast as well, so I know without looking that it’s her who wags her tail.

Babsan already knew whippet race well when I borrowed her, but the oval track was new to her. She threw herself into the bend the first time out of surprise but did the box break and solo license without any problems. One week after she finished her license and improved her time massively and since then she has just gotten better at each start! Babsan has already tried many tracks and distances and is above all a very strong middle distance runner. She practically never tires. She was second in the D-final at the Swedish Championships over 492 m in Borås 2021 (mixed genders) and improved her time every run. She has learned to go on the inside in the bends but also to find her way in a tight race. This amazing dog has an iron will and a great head, never letting that lure get away from her. If the race is only a short one she will try to run after the lure on the leash because who tires after just one lap? Not Babsan! The only thing she could improve are her box breaks because they are mostly oh-so-bad. On a good day she is in the back of the pack, and all the other days she is several lengths behind. But as I said before, a will of iron, and that gets her far!

Mentality

Behaviour and personality description, BPH

Babsan did BPH with gunshot at the age of 4,5 years and in the chart you can see her test summary compared to the breed average. I have tried to translate it to English but it is best understood by reading the full protocol (in Swedish) here.

The purpose of BPH is to contribute to increased knowledge about dogs’ mentality. It is aimed at breeders and at individual dog owners who wants to learn more about their dog’s mental characteristics.

It takes place on a standardized course where the dog gets to experience different situations. The dog’s reactions are described and together they give an idea of the dog’s mentality and personality. The handler, usually the dog owner, walks the course with the dog and get information along the course from the test leader.

Feminine female with a long head. Enough chin, nice eyes. Thin and small enough ears. Could have a somewhat better S-shaped underline and topline. Somewhat steep croup. Well muscled with acceptable angulation. Moves with enough reach from the side but a bit unstable in front. Well muscled.
2017-05-20 Hässleholm Unofficial Puppy Monica Edvisson HP 1, BOS
Small and neat female. Good head and expression, good bite. Good angulation behind, a bit scarce in front. It’s hard to judge her movement as she jumps more than she trots.
